Notice of Cancellation of OMF Family Concert, Educational Programs, and Welcome Parade

We announce that we are canceling the Concert for Children and Opera for Children educational programs, the OMF Family Concert general public performance, and the Welcome Parade open event in response to the COVID-19 alert level being raised to stage 5 for the Matsumoto city.

The Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival Executive Committee was preparing to hold the events in compliance with COVID-19 infection prevention guidelines stipulated by the Nagano Prefecture Board of Education and Matsumoto City Board of Education. Our top concern is the safety of children and students, and as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, we discussed and concluded that because the events would involve travel by large numbers of children and students from different schools, the educational programs and open event should be cancelled.
Consequently, we will also cancel the OMF Family Concert, which was to have the same program content as the Concert for Children. We apologize to those who were looking forward to these performances.
Details about ticket refunds for the OMF Family Concert will be announced at a later date on the OMF official website.

With the cancellation of the four programs above, the festival will end on Sunday, September 5, which is one day earlier than originally scheduled.
We are continuing with preparations to hold the other programs of the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival, which will open on Saturday, August 21.

2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival (2021OMF) Full Program Announcement!

2021 OMF logo.jpg

2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival (2021OMF) Full Program Announcement!

We are pleased to announce the full program of the 2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival (OMF). In addition to the Orchestra Concert Programs A and B announced in May, the 2021 OMF will also hold three chamber concerts and one family concert, for a total of six programs / eight paid concerts. With the addition of one performance on August 21, the festival will be held over a period of seventeen days, from Saturday, August 21 through Monday, September 6, 2021.

OMF official website and its program pages are renewed. All tickets go on sale on July 10 (Sat) 10:00 AM nationwide. Ticket page will be open when its ready.

[Orchestra Concert]
We announce the pieces to be performed at the orchestra concerts conducted by Masaaki Suzuki (Program A) and Charles Dutoit (Program B). In Program A, Mo. Suzuki and the Saito Kinen Orchestra (SKO) will ambitiously perform pieces that are all new to the festival. It is also noteworthy that the program will vary on the 28th and 29th with the popular Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D major as the centerpiece. Mo. Dutoit has a strong reputation especially for French works, and Program B will be an exciting lineup comprising repertoire that he excels in. We invite you to look forward to the collaboration between the SKO and the maestro, who continues to weave fresh timbre while arriving at his mature stage.

Orchestra Concert Program B

[Chamber Concert]
Our Chamber Concerts, which deliver quality chamber music every year, will offer two performances with Saito Kinen Orchestra virtuosos demonstrating their skills at the Harmony Hall with its superb acoustics. For Chamber Concert I, Masaaki Suzuki, who will conduct Orchestra Concert Program A, will perform as an organ and cembalo player. While Mr. Suzuki’s Bach program will obviously be a highlight as he is renowned as a leading authority of Bach, we also highly anticipate his collaboration with violinist Kei Shirai. A special selection of SKO members will perform in Chamber Concert II. We are now earnestly making arrangements for the performers and program content. We promise that the details will be exciting.

To celebrate the first day of the festival, we will hold an opening concert at Agata no Mori Bunka Kaikan Auditorium. As a rarity for the festival, five short concerts of under an hour will be held in one day, with tickets at the very affordable price of 2,000 yen per concert. We planned this with the hope that audiences will easily become familiar with the charm of individual SKO members. Takayoshi Wanami (violin), Yoshiko Kawamoto (viola), Dai Miyata (cello), Hiroshi Ikematsu (contrabass), Masaharu Yamamoto (clarinet), Masaru Yoshida (bassoon), Naoko Yoshino (harp), and Mineko Tsuchiya (piano) are scheduled to perform and will magnificently adorn the return of the festival after a two-year absence.

[OMF Family Concert]
The Concert for Children of the educational program invites sixth-grade students from Nagano Prefecture elementary schools to experience an orchestra concert, and this will also be held as a paid concert that can be enjoyed by families this year. The program will be Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, a very famous piece that everyone is sure to have heard at least once. Taking the baton will be Keiko Mitsuhashi, who studied conducting under Seiji Ozawa at the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy 2009–11 and served as chorus conductor for War Requiem at the 2010 SKO New York concert at Carnegie Hall. Enjoy the performance of the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra that is formed by promising young musicians chosen by audition and the introduction of instruments between music performances.

[Educational Program]
As customary, we will hold the Concert for Children inviting sixth-grade students from Nagano Prefecture elementary schools and the Opera for Children inviting first-year students from Nagano Prefecture junior high schools. Please see individual program pages for conductors and program content.

2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival (2021OMF)
Dates set for August 22 (Sun) – September 6 (Mon)!

We are pleased to announce the dates of the 2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival and the conductors of the orchestra concerts.
The Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival will take place for the first time in two years in Matsumoto City of Nagano Prefecture. It will be held over 16 days, from Sunday, August 22 through Monday, September 6, 2021. We are preparing to deliver first-class performances to audiences from stages in three venues in Matsumoto City and one venue in Nagano City while strictly following anti-infection protocols.
The Saito Kinen Orchestra (SKO), which is the backbone of OMF, will team up this year with Masaaki Suzuki and Charles Dutoit, both of who will be appearing in the festival for the first time. Mr. Suzuki, who will conduct Program A, is music director of Bach Collegium Japan and is internationally acclaimed as a conductor and performer of Bach. He has conducted numerous prestigious orchestras in Japan and abroad, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in recent years. Mr. Suzuki will be the first Japanese conductor since Kazuyoshi Akiyama in 2018, and his chemistry with the SKO is much anticipated for this program.
The world-renowned Charles Dutoit, who, like Festival Director Seiji Ozawa, has studied under Charles Munch at Tanglewood, will conduct Program B. Director Ozawa has a deep connection with Mr. Dutoit, having invited him to the Boston Symphony Orchestra several times as a guest conductor when he was its music director. Dubbed a “Magician of Sound,” Mr. Dutoit has conducted numerous top orchestras, and whether a fan or not, it will be exciting to hear the timbre of the SKO sound under his baton.

Details of the Orchestra Concert Programs A and B, as well as dates and details about the chamber concerts, educational programs, and open events will be announced at a later date.

With the strong desire of Festival Director Ozawa to deliver live music, all the more because of the current situation, we will be holding the festival this year while implementing all COVID-19 prevention measures possible, with the tremendous cooperation of the people of Matsumoto City and Nagano Prefecture, corporate sponsors, and fans who are cheering us on from Japan and abroad. Summer in Matsumoto will be filled with music once again. The festival dates are shorter than usual, but our program rich with highlights to see and hear will grace the summer of Matsumoto.
*The program announced in this release is current as of May 2021. Dates, content, etc. are subject to change depending on the COVID-19 situation.
