2022OMF_30thLOGO_trimmed.jpg

Born in 1992 (then as the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto), the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival marks its 30th anniversary this year. This will be the first festival in three years, having been cancelled consecutively in 2020 and 2021. In this milestone anniversary year, the festival will be held for 28 days, from Saturday, August 13, through Friday, September 9. Not only that, after the summer this year, we will hold a special concert in November as well.

Please see Program pages for each programs information. Tickets go on sale on June 11 (Sat) 10:00 AM (JPT).

While prudently implementing measures to prevent transmission of COVID-19, we are preparing to deliver the best in performances to venues in Matsumoto and Nagano Cities.

2022OMF Programs

After having done concert tours in the West since 1987, good fortune brought the Saito Kinen Orchestra and me to establish Matsumoto as our home and launch the festival in 1992. We mark our 30th anniversary this year.
I still vividly remember the apprehension of the first year. We boldly filled the stage of the freshly-built Matsumoto Bunka Kaikan (now Kissei Bunka Hall) with water in its inauguration with Oedipus Rex, which won an Emmy Award in the US. I was also amazed at how fans set up tents to camp out by the booths before tickets went on sale. The many concerts with the Saito Kinen Orchestra, which is my musical family, and the many innovative and ambitious opera productions all hold special memories for me, such as the outdoor opera (La damnation de Faust) held in the garden of Matsumoto Castle, the 1000 Voices chorus, and joint concerts with the children of Matsumoto. The festival was welcomed by the majestic nature and warm people of Matsumoto, and I am truly delighted that this has continued for 30 years. I am thankful anew for the support of audiences and the local Matsumoto community.
The orchestra concert in the first year opened with Ceremonial, for which the festival commissioned Toru Takemitsu. The orchestra concert this year again will start with Ceremonial. I believe that this will be a special concert that links the past 30 years to the coming 30 years. This year, we will also hold special autumn concerts in November to celebrate our 30th anniversary.
I invite you to enjoy our festival this summer in Matsumoto, and in November in Nagano as well. The Saito Kinen Orchestra members and I look forward to seeing you.

Celebrating 30 Years!
2022 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival (2022OMF)
Set for August 13–September 9!

Not only that, after the summer this year, we will hold a special concert in the autumn as well. OMF in 2022 will be stunning!
Dutoit! Okisawa! Nelsons!

Formed with the best musicians from Japan and abroad, the Saito Kinen Orchestra this year will team up with Charles Dutoit, who truly lived to his moniker of “Magician of Sound” in the 2021 streamed concert with accolades from the audience watching from around the world, and Nodoka Okisawa, a rising star who won the 2019 Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors, which is known as the gateway to success for conductors.。

While the performance in the no-audience streamed concert last year had approximately 120 thousand views and was superb, concerts are doubtlessly meant to be performed in venues with live audiences, and Dutoit will return to Matsumoto once more as vindication for 2021. The program will include Toru Takemitsu’s Ceremonial -An Autumn Ode-, which was commissioned for the first year of the festival in 1992 and performed with Festival Director Ozawa, SKO, and Mayumi Miyata (sho), as well as works by Debussy and Stravinsky, which drew out a magnificent performance by SKO, a group of professionals, in the streamed concert. Ms. Miyata will return to play the sho for Ceremonial.

Okisawa will take on the Mozart opera Le Nozze di Figaro. This production will be directed by the brilliant Laurent Pelly, who in the past directed The Cunning Little Vixen (2008) and L’enfant et les sortilèges and L’heure espagnole (2013). Okisawa is highly acclaimed in recent years for her guest appearances with key orchestras in Japan and anticipation is high for her performance as a conductor of opera. Both orchestra concerts and opera cannot be missed.

And in addition to the summer, we will hold special OMF concerts in the autumn at Matsumoto and Nagano Cities in 2022. For the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival 30th Anniversary Special Concerts to be held on November 25 and 26, the Saito Kinen Orchestra will be conducted by Andris Nelsons, Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Festival Director Ozawa holds special memories for BSO, having been engaged as its music director for 29 years from 1973 to 2002. And Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 is a symphony that Ozawa performed in April 2002 at his final BSO concert before stepping down as music director. We are greatly excited at the thought of the SKO sound resonating under the baton of an international conductor who has deep ties to Ozawa. We will later announce updates with details of the program that will be truly fitting for this anniversary year and invite you to look forward to this.

This announcement is current as of March 15, 2022. We ask for your understanding that content and scale are subject to change depending on the COVID-19 situation ahead.

I am so happy that this treasured music festival that I launched in 1992 with my Saito Kinen Orchestra colleagues will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
I hope for your continued support so that we can continue to deliver the music of this special Saito Kinen Orchestra from Matsumoto to the world.

The soulful performance of Saito Kinen Orchestra and Mo.Dutoit with Seiji Ozawa

_OR74929.jpg

It has been 10 days since the 2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival announced the cancellation of all performances. The performance of the Orchestra Concert Program B and it’s recording, which Festival Director Seiji Ozawa, Saito Kinen Orchestra, and all the staff have put their heart and soul into, has finally come true today.

9 am. The weather at the venue -Kissei Bunka Hall in Matsumoto City - was slightly cloudy. Members of the Saito Kinen Orchestra arrived at the venue one after another for the final rehearsal at 11:00. Everyone was excited and thrilled for the performance together after two years. Everyone must had felt the happiness of getting together and playing together as SKO. The overwhelming joy will surely be sublimated into the performance.

11 am. The final rehearsal started. The rehearsals under the direction of Charles Dutoit from August 31st for three days were thorough. Mo. Dutoit gave in-depth instructions for each part and created the sound precisely. The media attended the public rehearsal on September 2, was surprised to witness saying “We have never seen anyone giving such detailed instructions to “THE” SKO!". We knew for sure that it was because SKO is able to achieve anything that Mo. Dutoit aims to create. With Mo. Dutoit, who is renowned expert of French works and Stravinsky, the music expression of SKO deepened every second.
They performed the whole program in the last rehearsal and wait for the production at 15:00.

3 PM. SKO members dressed in concert attire gather backstage. Everyone awaits anxiously to go on stage. There are a lot of cameras for recording in the auditorium. Although it is a non-audience performance, the members could see the audience enjoying the concert on the other side of the screen. The stage door opened with a call of "Toi toi toi!" for the success of the performance, then 95 SKO members headed to the stage.

"Ma Mère l'Oye" opened the concert. Mo. Dutoit conducted without the podium with the smallest orchestra formation of the program. Mo. Dutoit moved and conducted freely as if dancing. SKO brilliantly played the rich colors drawn by Mr. Dutoit.
The next program was very different with the largest formation; Debussy "La Mer, trois esquisses symphoniques”. From the sound of waves gently approaching the coast to the swirling tides of the ocean, the ever-changing expression of the sea was expressed in a variety of hues. The image was so vivid that it felt as though the Nagano Prefecture was surrounded by Ocean instead of great mountains.

After the intermission, the third song was Debussy: Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. This is a song highlights each musicians' superb technique. The orchestra gave warm applause to the SKO members when the music is over.
The concert was concluded with Stravinsky’s “The Firebird Suite (1919 version)”.
Although it was once canceled, Orchestra Concert Program B revived like a phoenix, thanks to the passion and determination of the Festival Director, Seiji Ozawa, SKO, and all the staff. Mo. Dutoit and the finest musicians of SKO spun majestic and powerful harmony. Together with the spirit of Mo.Dutoit, the music must have flown to the audience’s heard as a firebird. The soulful performance ended at 16:57.

The SKO bowed to the empty auditorium and waved to the broadcast video cameras after the performance. When the recording light went off, everyone smiled and praised each other, then waved towards the auditorium again to the Festival Director Seiji Ozawa who had been with Mo.Dutoit and the SKO during the performance. Seiji waved back to the stage with joy.

The video recording of the performance will be broadcasted for free of charge on YouTube ONLY twice, from 19:00 on September 3rd (Fri) and from 15:00 on September 5th (Sun) (please check the description below for details). The archive distribution of the recorded video will be available around October.

We would appreciate it if you could help us reaching out to the public to deliver this magnificent performance made possible by all involved.

Festival Director Seiji Ozawa arrived in Matsumoto for rehearsals from August 31. He attended the rehearsals daily and listened to the sounds of SKO as they were polished to increase in brilliance under Maestro Dutoit’s baton. He was also able to see the maestro for the first time in years and conveyed his deep appreciation that he came to Japan at such a difficult time.
For Seiji Ozawa’s 86th birthday on September 1, we all celebrated with SKO members playing “Happy Birthday” and bringing a huge cake on stage.
On September 3, the day of the performance, he enjoyed the performance of SKO and Maestro Dutoit from the audience seats. During the final piece L’oiseau de feu, he conducted along to the superb performance of KO and Maestro Dutoit, renewing his hope that we will be able to hold the Festival next year with a full hall.

Festival Director Seiji Ozawa’s comments follow.

With the cooperation of everyone in Matsumoto, I am overjoyed that SKO was able to gather and perform together, even without an audience.
Hearing the live sounds of SKO for the first time in two years brought tears to my eyes.
I am also grateful to my old friend Charles Dutoit for coming at such a difficult time.

Matsumoto is a place that is indispensable to music.
I renewed my conviction of this today.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Matsumoto surely next year, when the Festival will mark its 30th anniversary.

Orchestra Concert Program B Free broadcasting on YouTube Worldwide!

orchestra-b-top.jpgOrchestra Concert Program B, originally scheduled to be performed on the 3rd and 5th of September 2021 for the 2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival, will be recorded and broadcasted for free on YouTube!

Playing in Matsumoto holds great meaning for the SKO members. All the SKO members understand the importance and significance of performing for the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival. Each member contributes their individual talents and are a vital part of the success of the Festival. The SKO members have been helping weave together the unique music and history of the Festival which is proudly celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022.

It was excruciating not only for Director Seiji Ozawa, but also for the artists, staff, and all parties involved with the Festival, to announce the Festival's cancellation on the 24th of August. The Director Seiji Ozawa and the SKO sought for an opportunity to perform together even for one time to create and deliver the music to the audience in order to share some light during these dark and difficult times. Seiji and the SKO deeply believe that the utmost mission for the artists is to try and better society.

Propelled by the sense of mission of the artists, we are happy to announce the broadcast of the Orchestra Concert Program B. The concert is to be performed without an audience and will be recorded and broadcasted.

The concert repertoire includes Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky, which Maestro Dutoit is highly reputable for. This program received so much public attention and eager anticipation that the tickets for the two performances were quickly sold out.

The friendship between Festival Director Seiji Ozawa and Maestro Dutoit dates back to when Seiji was the Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Seiji admired Maestro Dutoit’s music and invited him as a guest conductor to BSO many times.

“I know Seiji and his music very well. SKO is one of the very best of orchestras in Japan and it grew to well represent Seiji’s vision, as well as Seiji himself who is fine and sophisticated. I am very looking forward to working with SKO,” said Maestro Dutoit. He agreed readily to conduct in Matsumoto under the unusual circumstance, saying “I will do anything for Seiji”. All the artists including the Maestro and SKO members are tested for COVID-19 every three days and will abide with the rules of conduct in Matsumoto as preventative measures against the spread of COVID-19.

The blissful concert will conclude with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919 version). Considering Seiji and Maestro Dutoit both had personal relationships with Stravinsky, the friendship between the two great conductors, and the incredible energy of the SKO playing in Matsumoto the audience will surely witness a remarkable performance of this masterpiece. Making it even more special is that 2021 is the 50th anniversary after Stravinsky’s death.

Orchestra Concert Program B will be broadcast on the dates and times of the original performances. The additional archive broadcasting schedule will be announced later in October.

Broadcasting the sold-out performances for free is extraordinary, however, the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival and SKO would like to extend gratitude and share hope with everyone who has been supporting the Festival.

2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival All Performances Cancelled

In light of the rising cases of COVID-19, we are canceling the August 28 and 29 Orchestra Concert Program A, September 3 and 5 Orchestra Concert Program B, September 4 Chamber Concert II, and all open events. Accordingly, all paid programs of the 2021 Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival have been cancelled (*1). We deeply apologize to those who were looking forward to attending, as well as to all who were working in preparation of the festival.

When announcing the cancellation of the OMF Opening Concerts and Chamber Concert I on August 17, we also advised that we would be sending antigen test kits free of charge to those who have tickets to the later concerts and reside in areas subject to the state of emergency and priority preventive measures. These kits have been sent out from August 20 (*2) in anticipation that this would help to contribute to the safety and reassurance of guests as well as the residents who have fostered and supported the festival in Matsumoto as its home field for many years. However, the number of new COVID-19 cases remains high in Nagano Prefecture and all of Japan, and the medical care system is in strain. In face of the circumstances, we have reached this decision.

We pray from our hearts that we can hold the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival for its 30th anniversary next year, amid better circumstances where all involved in the festival will feel safe and reassured.

Please see the OMF official website [Ticket Refund Information page] for details on how to refund your ticket. Refund requests will be taken from Friday, September 10.

==Concerts subject to ticket refunds due to cancellation==
- August 21 (Sat) OMF Opening Concert
- August 22 (Sun) Chamber Concert I
- August 28 (Sat) & 29 (Sun) Orchestra Concert Program A
- September 3 (Fri) & 5 (Sun) Orchestra Concert Program B
- September 4 (Sat) OMF Family Concert
- September 4 (Sat) Chamber Concert II

*1: The open event “Harmony at the Castle” and "Welcome Street Live" were held on August 8. Festival Photo Exhibitions are scheduled to continue through Sunday, September 12 as originally planned.
*2: There is no need to return antigen test kits that have already been received.

This is very disappointing.
I am saddened by this heartbreaking, painful decision.

From the bottom of my heart, I look forward to seeing you all next year, along with my Saito Kinen Orchestra colleagues.

Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival Director
