In September 1984, Seiji Ozawa and Kazuyoshi Akiyama organized concerts in Tokyo and Osaka in remembrance and honor of their teacher Hideo Saito on the tenth anniversary of his passing. The world-class ensemble garnered enormous praise for the profound emotional depth of its performance and later became the foundation of Saito Kinen Orchestra (SKO), which comprised more than a hundred of Saito’s students who are successful musicians around the globe.

In 1992, the 90th anniversary of Hideo Saito’s birth, the SKF was founded as an international music festival in Matsumoto City under the direction of Seiji Ozawa and featuring SKO. The festival opened with Ceremonial, a commissioned work by Toru Takemitsu.
The opera was produced by Peter Gelb (now general manager of the Metropolitan Opera).

The opera was co-produced with the Opéra national de Paris. Another production was performed in a semistaged format at National Treasure Matsumoto Castle, Honmaru Garden (Stage director: David Kneuss). Our first outdoor performance, with an audience of approximately 6,000 people.
SKO performed special winter concerts in Matsumoto and Tokyo over the New Year holidays (1999/2000).

To celebrate the festival’s 30th anniversary, special concerts were held in November.
For the ONE EARTH MISSION joint initiative with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), we delivered a live orchestra performance (conducted by Seiji Ozawa, Beethoven’s Egmont overture) to the International Space Station for the first time in history.
